Kettlebell Training

One of my clients asked me today what the benefit of kettlebell training was in comparison to doing the same techniques with a dumbell or barbell- as they had seen alot of negative comments on the cross fit web site. To answer this there are so many reasons why K.B's are superior-

Firstly I prefer them for snatches, swings and other pulling techiniques because the K.B being basically a lump of iron on the end of a handle when swung generates far more centrifugal force than that of a hand held dumbell and so loads the body with more tension. Secondly At the top of the motion in snatches the weight coming over to the rear of the arm when done correctly causes the ab core to contract to maintain position whilst also working to some extent the internal rotators at the top .Thirdly You can't swap from hand to hand with a dumbell mid swing as you can with the K.B for alternate hand swings.

Another reason why K.B's are superior as in exercises such as the Turkish get ups the uneven weight distribution gives far more 'real world' strength than with Dumbells - when do you ever have to push carry or press something with even weight distribution- think of moving house when you hoist that sofa up- is it an even weight- this is one of the main reasons I feel K.B's are superior.

nice free body weight circuit

Here's a nice freebody weight circuit I recommend anyone to do anytime they have the time!
Get a deck of cards - shuffle well - you'll see why.
Diamonds are burpees
Spades are press ups
Clubs are squats
Hearts are crunches

deal from the top and complete the number of reps on each card moving quickly between each card. Picture cards are 10 jokers are 20. Time yourself and aim to complete better than previous time. Enjoy

behind the neck seated press

Hi,
a client asked me this week what the dangers of behind the neck press were and why I didn't include it in his training shedule. The dangers of behind neck press and I feel they out weight the benefit are that severe stress is placed on the rotator cuff - in particular subscapularis especially in clients with limited motion in this area. Inflammation in this area can lead to chronic shoulder impingement and loss of training etc as a result and may require surgery depending on the level of damage so I tend to exclude it from most client programs.
